223 to 292 Swap - Help
I just won a '57 292 Y-block on eBay ... and I was hoping you guys could give me some pointers on what I need to swap it out for my six cylinder.
This is what I know:
- Different motor mounts for trucks & cars. Luckily this is a truck engine.
- Crossover pipe has got to go.
This is what I dont know:
- Same generator?
- I think the bellhousing is different. I can get the 292 truck bellhousing from the guy. Is the flywheel and starter the same? What about the clutch?
- Same air cleaner?
- Different throttle linkage?
- Different front motor mounts on the frame?
- Can the crossover pipe be eliminated with the stock exhaust manifolds and some blockoff plates?
I'm sure there have been threads about this before, but I never have any luck with the Search feature. Any help you could offer me with these questions would be greatly appreciated.

You probably knew all that, but I didn't until recently...just thought I'd share. There's also a 292 spec sheet in my gallery if you need it.

It lists the 223 and 292 bell housings are different.
Utilizes a 11 inch clutch (292)
Has different flywheel (292)
Starter the same
Generator the same
Front motor mounts different. The mounts on the front cross member are the same. You would need the front motor mount plate for the 292.
Hope this helps

You need the truck front motor mount, the truck V-8 flywheel and clutch. A six cylinder flywheel won't work because on a Ford, the starter position is fixed on the bellhousing and the V-8 uses a larger flywheel. So, in buying the engine, get the bellhousing and clutch and starter, and the front motor mount.

So I've got the Y-block home with the bellhousing, clutch, etc. ... and my father tells me that it has a 4-speed bellhousing. Was there a difference between the 3-speed and the 4-speed?
The casting numbers on the heads are ECZ-C (I'm pretty sure) and I don't know where to find the block number. Are the ECZ-C heads the large-valve ones? The engine has a PCV, Mercury valve covers, and truck motor mounts and manifolds. Right now I think it was a Mercury car engine that was swapped into a truck. Can anyone confirm my engine ID?
