Is any one aware of an oversized oil filter that works well with the 97' F250 5.8L engine block? I seem to remember that my (former) 93' used a Motorcraft FL1A, but my 97' uses some dinky little thing. Or am I chasing a ghost?

that "dinky little thing" is the same filter as the 4.0, 4.6, 5.4, and 6.8 use. and if you use a bigger (read: longer) filter, you risk catching it on suspension and frame when the engine twists. change your oil at 5K KM (3K mi) and there won't be a problem

 

Does the FL1A fit in there? I can't see any reason it wouldn't.. maybe some "junior service guy" put the newer filter on there by mistake.

 

I've got the same truck. The short,820something,is used because of the factory oil-cooler adaptor. I installed a relocator kit and now I can run the FL1A. It also emiminated the oil mess when removing the filter. Good luck.

 

Our '90 Bronco with the 5.8 just takes the FL1A. No clearance issues.
