My 04 5.4 3v 3:73 LS 2wd SCREW Lariat consistantly gets over 20mpg at 65mph, and 19.8mpg @ 75mph. Avg 15.2 hwy/city. I currently have 35K miles on the truck!

There is BIG difference between a 2wd and 4wd, and in my opinion really tends to be a misleading mpg stat unless we're answering posts about 2wd trucks.

Boy has this topic been beat to death. Bottom line these trucks love gas as do most Fords in my opinion. An escort is the only economic Ford I have ever owned.
I can't see a dealer doing anything about it cause the easy way out is to say it is doing what it should.

It is a bit aggrevating when the window stickers read 12 to 17 mpg and you can only get the low end of that.

16 - 17 in a diesel sounds better all the time!!!

Has anyone tried this...when city driving turn the OD off. My thinking is the motor will not lug as much. These things will go to OD about 35-40 mph. I have done it a few time but can't seem to remember it often enough fot it to make a difference. My truck doesn't actually lug that you can feel when driving but I know that with the OD off the rpms would be a little higher and if your only going 35-40 mph they would still be in a reasonable range.

2 fords 1jeep - Sure there is a difference but not that much ( as you say)as to get 10mpg less. Gearing is the same, the only thing you have is a little more loss due to the extra drive train components, but it stll will not net such a major difference!

gpead -Even in OD it will not go into OD less then a certain speed, you would feel it if the engine lugged. They don't unless your lockup torques convertor is not unlocking!

My dealer called me this morining and says to try premium gas and that shoud help some but not to much and when I ask why some get 17 or better he says he would like to meet them and have them on a lie detecter because no body gets that good with these trucks!!!!11 He says the sticker says what you will get and it never is the bigger number.

The sticker on my new 06' CREW FX4 with 150" WB said 14 to 19 and I have only been getting 12mpg on long trips. I hope as I put on miles the mpgs get better as most of you have said. My brother has an 04' SCAB FX4 and gets 18-19 all the time. (even when it was new)

Geddy - Your dealer is not giving you good info! These trucks are made to run on 87! If you go premium based on the burn/octane composition you will probably get less. Running higher octane in an engine designed to run less could provide less performance since the fuel and spark curves are programed to run on 87! The only way to get more out of premium would be to change the curve which is provided by the aftermarket tuners!
Well tell your dealer he is full of it, because I do get it, and would be more than willing to give anyone a ride to prove it. At this moment my average for the current tank is showing as 15.7 both hwy and in town avg.
It's not an FX4 but a 2wd 5.4 with 3:73 LARIAT, but even with the extra drive gear it should not be down in the 10's! I would suspect the difference should not be that great!
Sounds like he just wants to get rid of you!

you cannot feel the engine lugging but is does shift to od. From my experience most vehicles will shift into od as slow as 35-40mph when maintained steady.
I can turn the od off and the tranny shifts down.

I have a 2005 STX SCab 4X4. Just last weekend I took it on a trip totalling around 130 miles. I took the local thruway which is under construction for a good portion of it. The speed limit was 45 and I stuck pretty close to that. When I got home and checked the mileage, it was almost 20 mpg. The best it's ever done. Most be something in driving easy and at a reduced speed. And for those that don't know, it has the 4.6 Triton.

My FX4 scab gets 13.5 mpg stop and go, and I don't drive it lightly. I use a calculator to figure out my mpg at evry fill up. The first 10,000 miles were mostly 11 and 12 mpg. Highway mpg has always been 17 to 18. GEDDY, your truck may either have to break in, or you may need to take it back to the dealer, because 10 mpg doesn't seem normal, or cost effective.

Picked up my new 06, 4x4 screw 5.4 3.55 auto xlt 1 week ago. With 654 miles on it I have gotten 15.63 and15.42 filling and calculating using miles divided by gallons. This is a mix of highway and city. Had an 03 3504x4 diesel that could not get this good.

All right...

I have a 2004, 5.4 liter, 3.83 ratio...4X4... FX4 with a lot of the factory toys. I get 10.8 miles to the US gallon pulling a 5100 pounds dry (about 5700-5800 pounds loaded) 5th wheel that is 2 inches shy of 12 feet high. I keep the speed at 65...and try not to get below 55 in the hills... I have seen the truck downshift to 2nd gear a few times but usually manage to keep the torque converter locked in 3rd... or unlocked in steeper grades... I get 18 miles to the US gallon on the highway at 65 miles per hour with nothing in the box or behind the truck.

All that to say that.... you need to get your truck looked at... somthing is wrong.

My opinion... my experience.

Man who are you supposed to believe today? My truck is at the dealer now on an unrelated issue so I figured I'd try a question about mileage.
"there is nothing you can do to change the paramaters on these computers unless the manufacturer sends us something. To change anything would be against Federal law" was his reply.
I then asked him about all these "reflashes" I hear people talking about that improved performance and the like to which he replied " I have heard of them on a diesel but never on a gas"
Who do you believe and how do you get any assistance from the dealer when they don't want to?

Bottom line he tells me there is nothing that can be changed to change the mileage on these vehicles!

Maybe trade it for a Chevy. Sorry I had to say it
