Help me with an easy problem

please help.
97 f150 4.6l 5-speed, 4x4 manual transfer case, auto hubs. The lever to the transfer case was hard to shift in and out of 2hi to 4hi, so the owner of this truck really pulled on the lever hard and now the tranfer case lever is totally free. moves back and forth with out changing the gears in the case.

looking under the truck you can see it is not connected. The question is now what. how do we hook it back up.

thanks for your help i tried the search, 22 pages no luck.

I'm no expert on the 4x4 system, but I would guess there is some shift linkage that's either broken or disconnected (my guess would be broken)... But, if you get under it, and have somebody rattle that lever around, you may be able to see where the linkage is, and where it is disconnected. If not, you may have to remove the boot to the transfer case lever, and take a look from the top. A number of guys around here know the 4x4 system like the back of their hand, I'm sure they'll be around soon to help.

Yeah check the linkage where the shift lever connects to the to the transefer case. That linkage could have been froze up from crossion and may have broke from the force or the spline on the linkage may have stripped out which may only be a minor problem. If the break occured inside the transfer case, It may require a tear down of the part to open it up and fix the internal components which I have little understanding of.

thanks for the help, It is on the outside of the tranfercase, where the lever connects to the case, my question is should i remove the lever from the inside of the truck (through the boot) or do i need to replace somthing that is broken underneath.

If i remember right, the lever has a simple nut and bolt conection which is easily findable if you crawl under the truck to view. I spay mine periodically in accordance to the service manual suggestion to spay it with greace every now and then.
