Rear Brake Conversion

Ok so heres the problem. I have a 1990 Bronco, and it has the most hateful things on the planet: Rear Drum Brakes! I hate drum brakes with a passion. I was just wondering if anyone has ever converted the drums to caliper brakes? If so where do I get a conversion kit? I have no desire to have my fingers pinched by spings and have to adjust these drums so I would like ot convert.

Bad idea I'm tellin ya!....Granted the rear drum brakes may be a bear to work on but the stopping power that they hold compared to disk breaks if set up correctly can not be beat. If you want to have the same stopping power you will have to get alot larger diamiter disk breaks. And by personal experience pulling a heavy load trailer behind with disk breaks on a vehical SUCKS!!!
do your self a favor in getting good quality drum break equipment (so you don't have to work on them as often) and when playing around with those nasty springs instead of getting your fingers pinched try useing some needle nosed vice grips ajusted to lock on a good grip onto the springs. makes life alot easier.

Smile what?????????????

not shur what hes talking about there is a reason almost all auto manufactures went to disk hell even most of the new semis are going to them (you ever got the front drums on a 57 chevy wet and try to stop fast ? scary) if you use the right calipers on the rear with the parking brake built or a good line lock they are awesome have to put in a portioning valve for the rear brakes but there alot of kits that use easy to find parts dont mean to sound like an *** but as for braking perfomance and maintanance ease of working on and parts availibility and less moving parts i think it would be good swap

Our F-350 has disc and it's awesome stopping power. When it comest to brakes the most important part in perforamnce are the front ones. Truthfully the rear ones don't do a lot, hence why you don't have to change em alot. I just prefer disck brakes, and was wondering if anyone did the conversion and had any tips?

Search this topic. Its been discussed at length. Masseysbronco just finished a rear disc swap if I am remembering correctly. Ask him how he likes it. Just remember that your front brakes do more than 60% of the "stopping" anyway. And when you do stop the weight of the truck shifts towards the front axle anyway. Not saying rear discs wouldn't be nice. Just keep these things in mind. And if you DO make the swap make sure your rear antilock is in working order or get an adjustable proportioning valve.
