1958 Ford V8 question

I saw a 1958 Ford Fairlane on Sunday that was in great shape and all original except for the radio antenna and the engine was a V8 and it had the distributor at the rear. Did Ford build an engine like this? If so, what displacement would it have been?
My "resident" Ford expert couldn't tell me what engine it was.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Either a 292 or 312 Y block. There is a forum dedicated to these engines further down.
