Timing for the 460 cuin 4bbl, 1977 F250 2wd
I have checked several manuals on the truck and am unable to find the correct setting for the timing on the vehicle, all refer to the VECI tag, I have looked all of the inside of the engine compartment on the truck and it is just not there, how do I find the correct timing settings for the engine?

Regarding timing... I would start with the typical 8 to 10 degrees before top dead center. But if you've got a hypo engine and the valves are pinging, retard the timing more to 10-15 BTDC, or increase the fuel octane of the gas you put in. Timing doesn't have to be done to specs but more to want you want.... the closer to TDC, the more power you can generate. But that same timing might cause havoc on your valves when you want to accelerate from a 2,000 rpm "cruising" speed.
On another note, I am in desperate need of the engine mounts (the "shells" that bolt to the block) that are found on the 73 to 79 f-series 2WD trucks with the 460 optional motor. Can you help me locate the left and right mounts? I am willing to pay $100 and shipping for the pair!

Am I wrong, or does that sound backwards? I'm thinking that going from 10Btdc to 15 is advancing the timing and will make the engine ping sooner than retarding the advance to 5 btdc. My understanding is that retarding or moving toward TDC reduces power and advancing (higher #'s before TDC) increases power, but increases the likelyhood of ping. All the factory tags I've seen in the wrecking yards have a range of 6BTDC to 10 BTDC. I subscibe to the school of thought, that you advance the timing till you start to get ping on a heavy load and then back it off a couple of degrees. In other words, set it where your engine likes it and runs best.

Pinging is predetonation. Cheaper gasoline/ lower octane fuels are more likely to predetonate. Pinging is more likely to occur as you compress the gas charge without lighting it via the spark. There will be more power developed if you can spark the charge as close to TDC as you can get. If you spark the gas charge early, the motor then has to compress the expanding combustion products before it can use the expanded gases on the power stroke. Does this explanation make sense?

thanks for the answers guys, I forgot to mention however that I do not know the curb idle speed either, and is it in neutral? I was kind of high on the hydrocarbons for my Nevada smog test and it failed and I am told that the correct timing and idle speed should even things out a bit.
