you cant go wrong with playstation 2, millons of games, backwords compatible with playstation one games that are like a dollar a piece now.
now for 50-100 bucks[depending on the brand]and some soidering skills you can get whats called a mod chip. with a mod chip you can take any playstation 2 game, burn a copy of it on to a blank cdr or dvdr. the playstation will play the copyd game just like it plays a regular one.
i love to rent games and copy them.
really you cant go wrong with any video game systems.
ive got nintendo, super nintendo, nintendo 64, sega master system, sega genesis, sega 32X, sega cd, sega saturn, sega dream cast, 3 playstation ones, 4 ps2s 3 moded. and a xbox. ive also got my dads old atari 2800, and intelvision.
i sold my 3DO, turbo graphix 16, and jvc xeye. out of everything ive ever had playstation 2 is the best.

I am not that good at gaming but got tired of buying a game system and then it becoming obsolete in a few months, the sony changed that I still have my ps1 in my bedroom and a ps2 in the living room and over a hundred games between the two(I never trade them in) I like the fact that you can still play the ps1 games in the ps2 and when the ps3 comes out I wont have to buy one right away(I thought it was to be out at x-mas time 05)so the sony to me is the best choice.

Also to consider when they get older and want to play online. Sony is free and Xbox you have to pay a menbership fee. The last bill I got from xbox was like $56.00 a year. My sons have both and to me the PS2 is the better way to go! Just as stated before, you can use Ps1 & 2 games on a PS2 unit.

xBox has the PS2 beat hands down on the hardware. It has twice the CPU power and a deticated graphics processor. Get the same game on each system and compare. The xBox is the only system that can give you DD 5.1 and HD resolutions. Online play is better on the xBox aswell. And it isn't cause they charge, it is because they limit it to no dial-up users. There are some free servers out there so that you can play online without cost. For the once in a while online experience they are perfect. Both systems are hacked, advantages go both ways there.
Now introduce the xBox 360. This thing has more processing power than most peoples computer all added up together. It is backwards compatible with xBox games if you get the premium system or get the hard drive add-on.
But to what really matters to kids. What games do thier friends have, those are the ones they want. For really young kids, Gamecube is the bomb. $99 bucks and no really hardcore games. You can keep an eye on what they play easier(if that concerns you.)
I don't know price on the PS2 right now, but xBox is around a bill and a half. xBox 360 is 300-400, if you can find them. The PS3 should be out by Christmas time. I think they are delayed again, trying to add more features like the new xBox.

I'd have to go with the PS2. Playstation is really good for RPGs, and has the variety of sports games if you're into that. Sony also comes out with alot of low-recognition kid's games, so if you shop around, you can get enough cheap games that you'll enough money for the new system by the time he gets bored. My brother has the xBox, and I don't really like the ergonomics for the controller as far as RPGs/adventure games. I would say xBox is better for the 1st person shooters or maybe racing games (just a guess, we don't have any racing games for it).
BTW, how old is your son? What kind of games would he be interested in?
