What is the Deck Height for a 292 Y? The info isn't on Mummerts site amazingly.

deck height

Mummert mentions problems with a deck height of .03" to .04" with the thicker modern head gasket being to much. When working with a machine shop tell them what you want up front...The block decked. It gets can costly becouse they may want to assemble it to check deck height and then remove everything to deck it.

Yes, but what is the deck height, that is the measurement from the crank centerline to the top of the block. Cannot find it anywhere. What you are talking about is deck clearance.

Dan, Tom has given you the straight scoop. Deck height is the height of the deck above the top of the piston (assuming the piston is flat). I believe the dimension you refer to is block height. I have seen it, but can't recall the value or where I saw it.

If you are in a pinch, you can take 1/2 the stroke, the rod C to C length, the piston height, and add some for the deck height, and be fairly close if you don't need an exact figure. By my reckoning, this would put you near 9.7"

Thanks wild, but it must be a general confusion of terms because one of my books for FEs uses the terms Deck height and Deck Clearance. But I have also heard the Term Deck Height used for Deck Clearance. I dunno.

Dan, I guess some folks do call the dimension you refer to as deck height, tho I never have, nor am I familiar with it being used that way. No matter, here is a thread where someone asked John Mummert the same question, and Mummert gave the answer.

Check it out.
