Not to totally hijack this thread, but the pics are now online. Apologies in advance to the dialup users for the file sizes as my regular hosting site balked at accepting the pictures.
First, the vehicles in question, my 1998 Crown Vic, and the 1997 F150, both 4.6L V8 engines:
97 and 98's had plug wires on the 4.6L. My 2004 Heritage has COPS and NO Wires as does my 2001 Expy. Our old 98 had wires and coilpacks. Hope this helps.
It could be that the early production run '97s (built in early '96) did only have 4.2s or 4.6s. The 5.4 was introduced in the later months of '96 (sometime after July). The '97s definitely had a 5.4 option.
My understanding was that the new, rounded bodystyle F150 was first offered in 1997. And, I thought that only the 4.6 was offered in the first model year. I drove a 1997 when they first came out with the 4.6 and was disappointed in the power, but there was no larger engine option.

Re-read my post... the early '97 models did only have one V-8 option. The newer body style trucks were sold in either December 1995 or January 1996 as '97 models. This means the '97 model year ran at least 20 months. This gives plenty of time for Ford to build '97 F150s with a 5.4 option.
The F250LDs would have been the only F250 with either a 4.6 and 5.4. The older body style still used the pushrod V-8s and straight 6s.
you mean the f 250 LD ? the superduty came out as a 98 model which also brought the 5.4. but 97 the 351w and 460 were still options.
Im sorry I guess I dont remember it as being F 250 LD. Im drawing a blank, refresh me...does LD mean "Light Duty?" What I remember was it had the 5.4L, 3.73s, I think a 10.5" rear end, and the same body style as the new F150s for 1997.
