I lucked out. I was looking at an '04 EB on the dealer lot and the second day I came in to put a deposit on it I was in the truck showing it off and heard this noise in the back passenger side. It was indeed Blend Door Actuator and the dealer fixed it before I picked it up

But eventually, when I started using it every other day, it has stopped ever giving me problems completely, even not using it for a weeek and then using it, it still won't make noise. What it was on mine was what controls the pathway whether or not it blows rear air from the ceiling or from the floor. It would go back and forth with every pop between the air and floor. But like I said, it no longer does it. Seems like it just has an issue with needing to be used?
Ok the thing won't shut up. Temperature works fine, I need the door that controls the cieling/floor control. I need to fix this before I have to drive it 2,000 miles in May/June. So can anyone gimme step by step on fixing this thing. And a way to get the part(s)?

Thumping Sound From Rear Air

Check out post on 2-19-2008 at 1:09 P.M. by alwaysford41. He tells you step by step how to check out the two actuator and how to replace the bad one. I ordered mine from rockauto.com around $44.00 and took about a hour to replace.

I ordered mine from rockauto.com for about $44.00 and it took a little over a hour to replace. The actuator near the top and close to the cup holder is the door to control if the air comes out the roof vents or at the floor. The other actuator controls the temperature and that is why the noise stops when you turn the control to 11 O'clock.

Well the noise doesn't stop with temp change, i should know cause this morning i had to run heat, and this afternoon AC. Both made the clunking. Switching it from cieling to floor stopped it though. Normally does, but sometimes it's like the floor sticks and switching it to ceiling fixes it. Then other times nothing seems to work lol. But anyways i found the article you were talking about, thx sooo much for pointing it out. I'll tear into it either tomorrow evening, or for sure Thursday morning. If that's the one (i'm sure it is) I'll go to Oreilley's that afternoon while i'm at college and get one ordered and hopefully put an end to that infernal clunking. Will update .

I think you can replace the top actuator by just removing the cup holder and package tray.

The top one is easy. I found the part for 17 bucks at a Ford dealer in NJ and had it shipped for $10. If you just want the thumping to stop for the time being, take out the change tray and unclip the power connector to the motor. Should take about a minute to do. The change tray is held in by barbs all around, just grab it along the long side near the window and flex it towards you.

I could not get the Doorman unit to work yet. The guys at Oreillys said the computer might be confused as to position. Anyways it's at the Dealership right now getting installed. I know the guy, so i'm not being charged any labor, and same 33$ price tag I paid at Oreillys for mine. So that's where i'm at.

When I was first diagnosing this problem, there was a pretty good picture detail of the steps to do this dis assembly of the rear a/c unit cover. Does anyone have a link to it?
Thanks, dano

How about in the other post you were discussing it in?

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...ump-clunk.html

Yours is the easy one based on your previous description, you need to pull the change tray out on the rear right side hump and it is right there. You don't need to disassemble the whole cover.

rear clunk

Thanks...too late, I done pulled all the trim pieces off yesterday and finished up today, only to find out what you just told me. damn. Oh well, now I know.
As far as pulling that tray out, I actually started to do that, but it was being a real bear to get any where. So thats when I started in on the trim pieces.
Thanks anyway,
dano
