Checking out the local tire dealer I was amazed at the prices for Runway tires that he offered. I've never heard of them. Has anyone used them? I'd like to know your thoughts.

 

Tires are a very important area on a vehicle and I see people who are too cheap in saving pennies to realize alot of times they are putting their life in danger. Without question, In my opinion the absolute best quality tire for toughness, quality , and wear is MICHELIN. Ask several people at tire shops which tires are toughest, and Michelin is it. If I want to save cash, it certainly wont be on tires. Get the best. Your familys life is in danger with anything less. When working at a tire shop years ago , I was amazed at how many people buy the cheapo tires. One brand with a very soft rubber and easy to get a flat with that sticks out in my mind as Junk was Kelly. Firestones had lots of bulges and tread separations. Michelins were always the best to me. Never heard of "Runway" tires. A quick search of Google indicates they are a low-cost Chinese tire. I think I'd pass on them.

 

runway tires are made in mainland china. those tires are rated for car use only. they carry a optimistic 1500 lbs capacity each. i run bfg tires which support 2,980 each. even the walmart brand douglas tires are better and last longer.

 

Yeah, I'm going to second the opinions listed here. The tires are the only thing between your truck and a world of hurt, I don't think the few bucks you may save are worth the possible outcome. Just my $.02.

 

After doing some checking myself I found these tires are made in China. However, they are DOT certified and have these UTQG ratings stamped on the sidewall: treadwear 460, traction A, temperature B. Capacity is rated at 2490 lbs and comparable to many name brands, which by the way they are all manufactured overseas. I'm not yet sold on these tire I'm still doing my homework. But, does anyone have a reasonably priced 265/70/17 domestic tire to recommend? I'd sure like your input!

 

UTQG is up to each maker to set so it means little.you can pick up a set of 17" tires from a ford dealer with rims for 500.00 .

 

I would go with Bridgestone Dueler AT Revos. We just put a set on the expy, and I absolutely love them. They are sooo quiet on the highway, they have great traction in the rain/snow, and they are supposed to wear really well.

 

I didn't know that the UTQG is up to the tire manufacturer to set. I thought tire makers had to submit their product(s) first for testing before making claims about treadwear, traction, and temperature.

 

yes it is a very wide margin of specs and very loose at that. they may be DOT approved or not. you can call DOT and find out if in fact they really are listed and if they are not you know that they are just shady fly by night tires.

 

I couldn't locate them in the NHTSA database. They must be a fly by night.

 

yep if they are not there then they are a illegal tire smuggled into the US with false markings and are dangerous tires.

 

Ok, after an extensive search taking in to account qualities such as performance, wear, speed rating, price, etc. I've narrowed my list down to the following tires; Goodyear Fortera, Firestone Firehawk Indy, Runway HT, and Bridgestone Dueler H/T684. Any recommendations before I make the final selection?

Just buy the Bridgestone Revo and be done with it. We have those on our truck and absolutely love them. There have also been a number of excellent reviews of the Revo on FTE
