Starter motor problem?

I have a 99' with 120k miles,4.6 engine and am experiencing starting problems. I replaced the original battery a few days ago when it would not start, and the battery failed a load test. Now with a new battery it will crank over two or three revolutions as if the engine is tight then will rev right up and start. I will check all connections from the battery to the starter, but it is odd that this coincides with the old battery dieing. Is this a symptom of the starter motor ready to die? I would rather replace the starter now before I am stranded. Possible solonoid or other problems?
Thanks.

You are on the right track. Sounds like the starter is failing. You can take it out though and have it checked at a local parts store before you pay for another. Just to be sure.
