97 psd died, back up cps= still dead.

I got a 97 f250 psd HD 4x4 with 198kmiles. Here's the events.
Leave home traveling at 60mph.

At 2 miles truck starts losing power, speedometer dancing, other instruments normal.

Pull over, engine sounds normal, but note a little shake.

rev a couple times and the shake stops, engine seems ok.

Kill engine, drain fuel bowl. Fuel sprays out? fuel bowl apparenltly building pressure? never saw that before. drain 4-5ounces and close valve.

Pull vacume hose start engine, vacume pump working.

Take off for home and truck begins to lose power at about.5 miles, Truck kills when i pull over as soon as i come to a stop.

Pull fuel filter while i wait for a friend, filter looks clean, bowl full, wipe a small screwdriver inside the little hole where the screen is and don't catch any trash.

Crank engine and note normal tach operation, crank again and engine fires and spins along with the starter but wont run.

Pull truck home, plug in Auterra OBD II tool. Note 36 stored dtc's and 3 pending!

Try back up cps. no start, no smoke. note normal tach while cranking.

Check postings on fte........ Start new topic.

I think something must be plugged, why would the fuel bowl be pressurized? That's what i am going to look for before it gets dark. I'll continue searching the post till i get back. All help greatly appreciated, i am on vacation this week and need to prepare for the youth duck season.

try having someone crank over engine while you are outside with the fuel bowl drain valve cracked open. on my dads truck if you drain the fuel bowl and then close it and try to crank it will not refill either. but you may have a bad fuel pump.

edit: just wanted to let you know incase you dont our trucks fuel pumps are mechanical. so it wont fill unless motor is cranking.... fwiw

I changed the oil and filter. I removed the air filter so i know there no air restriction and cranked off both fuel tanks and still not a pop. I had my wife crank on it while i pressed on what i am sure is the fpr schrader valve, looks like a tire tube valve, and nothing came out. If i remember right, on my previous psd, if you pressed it fuel would bleed out. I pressed it before and after cranking a few times and it would bleed off a little air and thats all. Also i noticed the oil pressure guage on the dash is not showing anything, should it read oil pressure while cranking? I have about 2 hours left to troubleshoot till' the International parts store and dealership closes I am willing to risk a couple hundred dollers even if i'm not sure of the problem. I am on vacation and was planning to spend a couple days in the swamp to prepare for the youth duck season. So any ideas would be appreciated! Oh, and i also checked all known fuses and did'nt find any bad ones. And i checked the hpop and noticed it loss a little more than an inch since last night fwiw, so i topped it off. I've been chargign the batteries between task also.

well i would say fuel pump maybe? after a few cranks the oil pressure gauge should be registering something.

edit:unless you filled your oil filter it will take some time to show oil pressure. did you try to leave the drain valve open and crank?

I filled the filter with oil minus about1.5 inches to keep from spilling when you tilt it to screwon. I was'nt getting oil pressure even before i changed the oil. I did crack the drain on the bowl while my wife cranked, i'm not sure i understand what i was supposed to see but it sure seemed like it was dropping fuel faster than just gravity, so i considered it good. A while ago i removed the valve on the fpr, made a short crank and did'nt see anything, bone dry. I checked out a couple chiltons manuals from the library, a 92-96 truck and van and a 95-99 truck and van. I just checked into changing the fuel pump in both books and one says to remove the turbo and the other does'nt mention such.......?

Wow. I have no idea what any of those codes mean. I looked at every engine/drivetrain code I have access to and every one of them starts with P0 or P1.

What did you pull those codes with? I guess it does not have onscreen definitions.

There are a couple of good fuel pump change threads in this forum. From what I understand you do not have to pull the turbo to do it, but it makes it easier....Of course when going that route pulling the turbo becomes the hard part of the job.

I use a palm handheld with the Auterra software as sold on ebay, I'm not too impressed with it, I used it on a Honda once and it would'nt show any codes even when i pulled a plug wire. The onscreen definitions were only availabel for 7 of the bunch.

I picked up a fuel pump but i shut down till i can buy and modify a wrench. i will not go through 10 kinds of hell to change a chickensit full pump. I'm still not sure if that will fix my problem. And still not sure about the oil pressure.

Anyway heres the codes that i have desc. for.
P0020..."a" cam position actuater circut bank 2
P0012...Cam position timing over retarded
P0215...Engine shutoff soleniod
P0255...Injection pump fuel meteringcontrol a intermittent(cam/rotor/injector)
P0035...Turbo bypass valve control high
P0984...Shift soleniod e
P0393...Cam pos. sensor "b" circut high input (bank 2)
P0011...'a' camshaft pos.-timing over- advanced or system performance (bank 1)
The tool tells me to refer to the vehicle repair manual for the other codes.

well its obvious you have or had a cps sensor problem. have you tried to reset the pcm by unhooking batteries for about 10 minutes and then scan for codes?

maybe your oil pump is bad and not pumping oil up to the hpop?
i think your hpop would of been empty if this was the case.

i would take a good look at that cps. i think thats where your problem is??????????
have you looked at your plugs that connect to the vc's?
have you pulled the vc's to look at your uvc to see if any are burnt?
how good of A CHARGE DO YOUR BATTERIES HAVE ON THEM????
do you have a buddy with a 94-03 psd? you could try using his idm.

Ok, i got the new fuel pump in and cranked 3-4 times to total about 15 seconds, i checked the bowl and it was still empty. i switched tanks and repeated the above, checked the fuel bowl and it had less than an inch so i filled the bowl with Stanadyne. cranked for another 12-15 seconds and nothing, noted a little air pressure on the shrader valve. I thought i remember the bowl would fill faster than that? I did disc. the batteries yesterday when i cleaned the terminals for probably and hour. The oil guage is working now and i did check the wire harnesses. I think i will go buy a cps to see if that works, maybe both of mine are burnt.
