New to me truck with 4x4 problem

It got a 97 4x4 with a 4.6 for a very good price. All power, automatic, 110,000 miles, and true duals. Sounds mean. I checked for cracked doors and leaky windshield and there are no signs, but may have leaked in the past and been fixed, also no signs of engine oil leaks in the common spots. I'm not sure if there is a problem with the power options not working all the time cause i just got the truck last night. The only problem I'm sure of is the 4x4. It is stuck in 4-hi. It has the dash button system no floor shifter. Doesn't matter what it is put in stays in 4-hi. After serching the posts I'm coming to the conclusion that it is either the GEM or the motor on the trans case. Which should I check and how do I check. Or is it probably somthing totaly different. I'm used to the pre 97 trucks and this new one is totally differant so I'm kinda lost. Any and al help is appreciated. Thanks

in other threads it is said that there is vaccum that goes to the front dif and locks in the front diff, I owuld check for the vaccum lines and see if one is not busted or came off. the vaccume line that disconnects the front diff might be disconnected. something to check

I thought the vaccum was used to engage 4x4 and once the vaccum was lost 4x4 would disengage? I'm really not sure how that whole system works but I will sure find out as I solve this problem Thanks for the advice Lance.
