truthful gas mileage?

I'm in the 1987-1996 club now but am looking into moving up in the world. I get about 10mpg with an 89' (got a lift) but was wondering what i would get with a 1997 f150 w/the 5.4. I was also interested what a 3" or 5" w/33 or 35's would do to my mileage. I know everyone brags and boosts their gas mileage when they say it, but I'm looking for actual mileage here.
Thanks
brian

the bigger tires will kill you. but expect about 12 mpg in town and up to 17 or so freeway. the power difference from your current engine to the 5.4 will be huge.

remmeber that your driving habits affect the MPG you get. If you go big tires and all then don't expect much MPG.

Just checked my 2000 150 2wd 5.4 with 74,000 miles. My drive is 3/4 highway[70] amd 1/4 around town. I was focused on best milage with casual start/stops. I was pleased with 15.

I get 15-16 mpg on my 2002 5.4L FX4. I drive conservately. I get 14-15 on my recent 98 5.4L 4x4. Mostly 50-50 city and highway drivings.

That is some decent numbers for a 5.4, I have a 4.6 in mine and so far on average it gets 21 mpg on the highway which I thought was pretty decent, but if I would have known that the 5.4 would be getting these numbers I sure would have got that instead!

Dallas to Huntsville is 160 miles flat as a fritter and slightly downhill to boot. Even with perfect weather and a tail wind I say 24mpg is total BS.

So to those who have driven the 4.6 and 5.4 or those who feel strongly, is there a giant difference between the two or some factors which would make one a lot better buy.

I personally think there is a big power difference in the 4.6 and 5.4, if I could have I would have definately gone with the 5.4.

5.4 definitely. Make sure you get the 3.73 gears as well, as these 3.55s suck.
