Power Steering Pump Noise
OK...I know the Ford power steering pumps are noisy, and the one on my truck (77 F350, 460cid) is a reman unit installed before I got it. It is irritatingly noisy, but it seems to work fine. The dealer suggested that if it ain't broke, don't worry about it, and that a new unit could be the same.
What can be done? Will a "new" unit be better? Is there another brand to go with that interchanges? Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Just curious. What noise are you all hearing? My truck is a '75' F350. My pump made a whine like it was low on fluid when it was in fact toped off. I replaced it with a used pump from a '71' LTD. All quiet now. I use power steering fluid, not ATF. Are older pumps perhaps quieter. The pump on my '64' Galaxie is also very quiet. Just wondering.

It's a whine sound as you turn the wheel. The older one are possibly quiter but all the Ford pumps I've ever heard from the late 70's until the late 90's whine. I've had people come into the store where I work to buy a new one b/c theirs' whines so bad. They put the new one on and they claim it's still whining. I keep telling them that's a Ford p/s characteristic. They whine.

Power Steering Pump Noise
Any air in the system will make them howl. I discovered this when I replaced an aging power steering fluid cooler hose on my 77 F250 4x4, which howled on every turn. This necessitated replacing the fluid. As a matter of course, I jacked up the front end and forced the tires from side to side several times. Quite to my surprise the steering became relatively quiet. The only thing I can think of is that I had had air in the system up until I replaced the fluid.

to bleed it you pull the low pressure hose(return) off and turn the pump, keeping the resivior filled as you go. you can turn the pump easily by cranking the engine while the coil wire is off the distributer.
I replaced my PS pump a couple of months ago and the new one is much louder than the old (F***ed) one was. I dont think there is any real solution:7

i have had the same problem. my truck had a motor swap and custom ps mounts (460 in a 77 1/2 F250). i replaced the pump with a used one from a 79 and it was a little better but then i blew a hose and it was suddenly much worse. i then was parting a 76 F150 and used that pump and it is absolutely quiet now no matter what! problem is the return tube on the pump has a hole worn in it about 3/4 from the housing. i have a piece of hose over it with a clamp on it but i know i need to fix it right but i am afraid to touch the pump! hawkrod
