Do you keep the steering wheel pulled tight against the stops when turning "all the way"? This keeps the pump trying to turn further and loads the engine a bit.
Also, when the wheels are turned all the way you are going forward and to the side, takes more power to do than straight ahead. The additional power required increases with how sharp the turn.
