Question Vin # research

I have a 78 f150 with a title but no vin tag on the door. The state of Nebraska has a vin verification program, so I cant get it licensed until they give me a state vin. I located the vin on the frame but I think I am missing a few numbers or letters. The vin was located directly below the passenger door on the out side of the frame. Here is what it said or so I read it

08 IA 0L ____
B 25

on the back of the frame behind these numbers were the letters CM.
The blank is where I think there was something but I cant read it. So if anyone knows where I can find vin # info or how many characters are suppose to be there it would be a great help.

That does not look like a VIN number. If you have a service manual you can find the VIN information.

A VIN will look like: F15SLAK9000

There is information on a VIN and rating plate decoder in the Read First: FAQ thread at the top of this forum.

My '74 highboy had the vin in the frame rail on the passenger side right above the front axle. There was a turned-up lip on the frame, and the VIN was right there. You could see if (if the chassis was clean) by looking above the right front tire on the upper part of the frame.

Look on top of the frame...

It's my understanding that there are 3 VIN locations on our trucks (I have a '77).

1) Door tag.
2) Top of the frame under the driver's seat (not on the outside). You'll need a mirror to see it, if you can.
3) Top of the frame under the alternator (approximately). I've never found mine, but it's supposedly there.

Hope this helps.

Franky,
If it is a 2x4 with a regular cab the vin # will start like this:

F15????????

11 digits in all.

The 5 is followed by a Letter for the engine (H = 351M, S = 400, J=460)

This digit will be followed by a letter for the plant it was built at:
(C=Ontario Truck,K=Kansas City,U= Lousiville Kentucky)

This digit will be followed by 2 letters & 4 numbers.
This tells the month it was built in plus it's assembly line number.

There are also usually Buck tags on the truck in weird places.
Look at the center on the top of the firewall for a tag riveted to it.

Some buack tags have the vin # or portions of the vin number on them.

If the engine is original,I can get you within 2 months of when it was built.Get me the actual casting date of the engine part (The block is best)

That's where mine was, come to think of it, it might have been on the flat portion of the rail, not a rolled-up lip.

Thank for everything The title says F14SLBJ5405 so using the decoder everything is lining up so far. F150 4x4, 400, metallic brown. I don’t have the engine right now it is being built but I'll get the numbers tomorrow and then we can se if production dates line up there. I will also go over the frame with a wire brush to find the right #'s. I'm so bummed those were not the numbers I needed.

F14SLBJ5405

F14= F150 4x4
S = 400
L= Michigan Truck plant
BJ5405 = Truck number 5405 built in March 1978

Engine parts should have been cast in around December or January .

Please don't say Metallic brown.People call our car brown.
It's actually a Deep Rose Quartz colour

Ford had about 7 shades of brown.

They had names like Cinnamon

Wondering if you could help me decode a vin# for a 1978 Ford Pickup? The VIN is F14BLCD9824. The reason is everything says F150 on the truck but the title is listed as a 3/4 ton. Any idea? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

I actually have no clue, but the 3/4 ton doesn't match with the "F14" part of your VIN.

I've never seen a title list "3/4 ton" but I've spent all my life in NY, what do I know
