Which 6cyl to buy?

I'm considering the purchase of a 6cyl F150. I don't know anything about them. My original plan was to buy another Diesel, but I am looking at different possibilities. I am looking for a durable, dependable, good MPG truck that I can tow with (if I need to). I was told by someone that the straight 6 (pre-1997?) are more reliable than the v-6. True or not? What kind of performance and MPG can I expect from a '97+ 6cyl? What about the 4x4s? Are there any lift-kits available for 2wd F150s? Which one would you recommend and why? THANKS!

Hey you Texan,

I believe I got your answer as to what engine to buy. I have a 1994 F150, straight 6 cylinder, and always from day one had a 16 ft. trailer to haul materials for my landscape company. Soils, mulch, a dozen large trees etc. I doesn't burn oil, nor has it ever leaked oil. It's never seen a mechanic at any dealer or corner garage. Yes, I have changed the starter twice already...minor. I've always changed the oil at 3,000. Yes, sometimes I slipped, and couldn't get to it till 4,000, but my goal's always been 3,000. Gave it plugs when it was needed, wires, air filters, tires before going bald, but never changed the shocks. Beefed up on leaf springs from day one.
I guess what I'm trying to say is, I will be turning 200, 000 miles by next week...currently 199,800 on it. Damn proud of the truck. So damn proud that last year I found a 1993 F150 with 100,00 miles on it, and bought it for about $3,300. Now I own two gems because afterall, they quit making the inline 6 motor, and after living with this truck for 12 years I can honestly say, shame on Ford for not continuing the inline 6 motor. But perhaps you know why they did. Currently I'm getting 15 mpg. Eh, so what....I can afford the extra gas as I'm saving so much because of never breaking down. Never a catalytic problem, never a carboning up problem, the check engine light has never gone on, and don't forget to change the gas filter. Common sense stuff. I've always used Castrol 10W30 oil and a Fram filter. Good luck!
