alt/ voltage regulator problem -help!

I just finished putting my 84 bronco together and I have a very large battery drain. I suspect the voltage regulator is bad because I have 12 volts to the BAT terminal on the back of the alternator and 12 volts to the field terminal on the back of the alternator with the key off. shouldn't the field terminal on the back of the alternator be dead with the key off ???? I can't remember but that makes sense. Also I thought my electric choke plugged on the field terminal on the back of the alternator also and I am sure that it should only be on with key. this is an external regulator. Your help is greatly appriciated. mike bryan.

my 85 F150 alternator is externally regulated. unfortunatley i dont know if its supposed to have power to the field terminal on the alternator or not, but all i can say is that the regulator was like 10-15 bucks, and i'd give it a shot. It fixed my problem.

Field terminal should go over to F terminal at voltage regulator. There are many wiring diagrams posted in threads on FTE. The electric choke should hook to stator terminal on alternator. Your wiring doesn't sound right.
