Redneck Air intake modification

airboxmod.php

Follow the link above.

Is that modification legit and safe??

Does the air intake sensor need to be changed??

I already have a K&N filter in the stock airbox and really can't afford a full intake system so I'm looking for cheaper alternatives but do not want to risk any damage to my motor.. Thanks...

I did something very similar almost 2 years ago and haven't had any problems.

What specific concerns did you have?

I didn't change the AIT.

Guess I'll give it a try and see what happens.

Yes its safe, but you wont see much gains from it. It might even hurt performance on hot days since the filter will now be sucking hot air from under the hood instead of cool air from the bumper/fender.

I cut the box on my truck years ago when I put the K&N. I think both were a big mistake. I used to go off-roading alot and the K&N let in too much dust into the intake and the cut box made it prone to splashing water. I'm running the paper filter again. If you dont off-road much on dusty trails, you're okay with the K&N

Someone on one of the Lightning boards did some testing using the IAT sensor along with some additional temperature sensors under the hood of their truck.

When sitting at idle, warmer than ambient air temperatures where recorded entering the air intake using an open element filter. But within seconds of moving, the hot underhood air was pushed out with outside air and the air tempuratures going into the intake was basically ambient.

I'll see if I can dig up the link.

That set up won't be much louder because the silencer type baffle is still in the factory elbow. Not much to be gained there. The good kits also come with a isolator shield to keep the warm air away from the filter.

Thanks for the input guys. That was my next question, what about the hot air coming in from the motor.

Guess I could modify part of the airfilter box to let in more air but not open the filter completly to the elements.

Can the stock baffle in the elbow be removed safely???
