Another vote for 97. Definitely a solid truck, I love to drive it.

I sold a '97 to move up to a Dually '04, and "I've missed that 97 since I left her sitting in somebody elses driveway"..hmmmm...sounds a little like a country western song...any way, that ol 7.3 was the best motor I ever owned. Pretty e-z to work on too.

my vote goes 97, may be easier to find also since they ran the '97 up to '98. (there was no 98 model year) I'm happy with mine, solid truck, fairley easy to work on, have subtle improvements over previous years...

If you're going to leave it stock, then I'd vote for '97. But, if you plan on doing anything to increase the power output, the model year doesn't matter. I personally prefer the look of the tailgate on the 95-96's.
I'd look for the truck in the best condition, with the options you want, and not worry too much about the model year. Though the 97's had a higher hp rating when new, a 95 that's been taken care of would still run better and stronger than a 97 with a checkered past.
Just my $.02.

I was wonder what kind of mods. I could get to increase both mpg. and horsepower and torque.

I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks, Mike

Generally, anything that will make the truck more efficient, will also improve these three areas. An improved intake, downpipe and freer flowing exhaust, and a chip will do wonders.

I'm still new around here but I think the 96 was the best year. It's due to the fact that that's what I have.

'96 was an awesome yr, but I'm a little bias, lol. I'd definately look for chips, intake and exhaust, help everything you just asked about.

I come from a Ford family. We have owned crew cabs from 94 on up to the new 05'. I currently have a 96', and love it. very strong durrable, and fairly easy to work on.

I was wandering how the maintance cost differ from gas engines. How much more expensive is it to repair deisel as opposed to gas engines.
