for you moonroofers

My wife fell in love with a 2002 Explorer Ltd, that had everything she wanted except the moonroof. We had it installed by Ford. It did cost more that the the option moonroof. It has performed flawlessly...funny thing was that the warranty on the add-on roof was 6 years instead of the 3yr warranty for the option roof!!

okay, the moonroof option can be had from the factory but in my case, probably only with a custom ordered truck. out of the roughly 350 F-150 in stock at my local dealer in Ft. Myers, FL, I didn't notice any with the moonroof. But, I only scoped out the models that I was interested in. Primarily the FX4. Maybe if I cast a wider circle of dealer inventories when I am ready I might find something close to what I am after. But, to tell the truth, if I am going to shell out 30+ grand for a something, I am not interested in close. I want what I am after and not really interested in compromise especially since I do not plan on getting another vehicle for at least five years after this purchase. Basic parameters are simply an FX4 supercab with tow pkg., moonroof, power rear window, power driver seat and that is about it. Nothing major pimp. Not alot of stuff that I really am not interested in. And done in the dark gray color in order to keep with a company color scheme. But, to score an end of the year savings deal, I am prepared to take on a few minor accessories that I really would not have ordered on my own (upgraded stereo for instance) as I probably still would come out way ahead pricewise over an '06 custom order. So the answer to my question is, yes, the moonroof came from the factory for the majority of you guys. One other thought, what is the latest in the year the dealer would take a custom order for an '05?

As to the moonroof/sunroof terminology question, I seem to recall that back in the mid-seventies when these terms first came to my attention, the sunroof was termed for a sliding piece of glass that opened and let the air in where the moonroof was a fixed piece of glass and the only thing that slid open was the part of the ceiling that allowed the light to come in. But, that was awhile ago and the terms probably got thrown together somewhere along the line. I think it was the Firebird line of cars (not the Trans Ams, they had T-tops) that offered either/or on there option list. They certainly weren't they only cars though at the time to offer one or the other, or both..

I actually started a similar thread a while back. There was quite a bit of history mentioned in this thread also. Perhaps you'll find it interesting.
