Angry Took truck in this past Saturday...

They had it for over 2 hours to replace the spare tire lock with a new one. Then I recieved a call on my cell phone and was told that they needed to order another part. Now I have to take it back this Saturday so they can finish the job. Glad I don't have to pay for any of this.

If they were going to drill it out, all I gotta say is that they must have one heck of a long drill bit! My Dad bought an '03 F150 last summer and it didn't have the key with it either....the salesman told him they had the master keys and they tried but couldn't get them to work. Dad took it a few more places that assured him that they could get the tire down.....no luck. So, after a little bit of 'begging' on my part, Dad brings it to my shop and I had the spare tire down in less than an hour and now you can use the jack handle to crank it down without the key. I can't believe anyone would steal his spare, but I guess it has happened to other people. The reason they master keys wouldn't work is that the 'lock' was so corroded with dirt/rust that the keys wouldn't fit in the pattern on the lock. Dad and Mom were so pleasantly surprised and still don't know how I did it, but it's alot easier than you think...

Travis

Edit: Just noticed the age of the posts....sorry! But really good information on this site and those darn keys are almost always missing.....

I had a problem with mine being worn out and full of sand/dirt, it got to be a pain. So I went underneath, twisted the tube and pulled it out, then you have full access to the keyed "lock", I pried it out with a screwdriver so now it doesnt need a key. If I was concerned with losing my spare I would put a real lock on it with a cable. Now I can crank away at my spare and have it lowered down in a few seconds. With my worn key it would not crank every turn as it did not grab well enough. Problem solved for me!

2003 F150 Spar Tire Key?

I know that I need a spar tire key to lower my spar. I purchased the truck last year and never had the key. Does anyone know how to get part numbers or repalcement keys? Or is there some way I can lower the tire without it.

Welcome to FTE KeithCooley! Read the reply from advocate that is just before your entry to this thread. He explains how to get the "lock" out so that you can use the jack handle by itself to crank the tire down. Good luck!

Just went through the same drill when I bought my '03. Mechanic in the service bay crawled under the truck and popped out the lock with a screwdriver. Apparently the only thing holding it in place is a small wave washer, now I just use the jack handle.

Yep, Yep....pretty cool ain't it? The biggest problem is if the spare is in the way in the first place, but pulling the bumper isn't that big of a deal if it's on a hoist.

Here are some pics of the key system.

Thin arms can reach up around the spare and pull the guide tube off of the winch. Then you pry the lock out of the winch. Now you can use the winch without any problem.

Is there a trick to getting the guide tube off the winch? I tried twisting and pulling on it for quite a while and it won't budge.

2x I have had to do this two times before for different trucks. Normally what I do is take the valve core out of the tire. Hopefully the winch wasnt tighten down hard, when the tire is flat sometimes you can push it to either side maybe a inch or two. Then cursed and yell getting your arm wedged up there to usually have to twist very hard to remove plastic pipe. If the key is installed properly like the one above you wont be able to pry it out. Usually I lock on a pair of vice grips if I can and wiggle it till it is out or until it has moved enough to pry it out.

And I would also like to see this drill bit the dealer suggested... plus what the hell would a drill bit do other than making it way worse
