repairing a rusted bumper

Hi,

I have a 94' 3/4 ton truck with a 10" deep drop bumper, chrome steps, etc. It's not a cheap bumper. It took me a few weeks just to find a receiver hitch that fits under it.

The problem is that parts of it have rusted completely through, esp. near the lisence plate lights. The chrome is almost perfect though. I was going to integrate a 6 pin trailer connector when I realized that it was falling apart.

Do you think it's worth rebuilding the rusted out parts of the bumper? A new one costs about $300. I'm going to have to go with a 10" drop bumper again or else the hitch will look strange hanging down so low.

Thanks,

Bryan

My guess is that, even if you do the patch/welding yourself, that by the time the plating shop gets done with you it will cost you more than replacement. Good luck.

The plated sections of the bumper are removable from the frame of the bumper itself. I've never seen one like this before. I think it's because with this bumper you can either get black, painted, or chrome steps. The portion near the hitch and license lights are flat black. The chrome is fine.

I'm going to clean it up tonight and see what it looks like. My neighbor has a sandblaster that should do the trick.

Just a note, I tried plating shops from the southeast to the far west, and no shop I called /e-mailed would even consider chroming my factory step bumper on my 79, and I offered them up to 400 bucks to do it, no takers. So , you may want to get a commitment from a plater on plating it before you mess your factory chrome up blasting around it, good luck
