Newbie with question

Just joined this forum and need some information. I am the proud owner of a low mileage (114000miles) 1999 F250 SD and have recently begun to tow an all steel, 26 foot gooseneck "toybox." Fuel went from 22 mpg, interstate when running empty to 13 to 14 on the interstate when towing.

I have seen the discussions about 'chips' and 'tuners' and need to know more about both. I looked at some of the threads and could probably find information there but it is 'thready' and hard to follow for someone who really has no clue.

My desire is to improve towing ability(aka horsepower) yet maintain the good economy when I am not towing.

If someone can point me to the proper url to get technical details about the subject, I would really appreciate it.

jerry (bearswatchin) and I really do, IAW my wife

1st of all "Welcome" to FTE, a great place for all Ford trucks & truck folks! Now, I had an '01 F250 w/7.3L PSD. I pulled a 33' Phoenix 5th wheel RV. I had a 75 HP chip installed w/new and I avg'd 22mpg empty. I would get 11 to 12 mpg w/pulling, which is better than the 8.5mpg I get now with the 36' motorhome w/250 HP Cummins. I had great power & mpg w/empty and plenty of power pulling! Good luck & have fun!

Bears, Welcome to the forums. There are many things that you can do to help your HP and Mileage. Here is the order and things that I would do to help you out.

1. 4" exhaust, no cat or muffler. ($100 to $500 depending on how resourceful you are.)
2. Tymar intake - Tymar performance $124 (This alone makes a huge difference.)
3. Gauges- Boost, Pyrometer, Tranny temp
4. Tuner or chip of your choice.

No, these mods aren't cheap but they really make a difference and are worth the money. There are a ton of cheap mods that you can do that also are worth their weight in gold. But the two I would recomend right away are the 10K mod and the FPR shim. You can feel those mods in the seat of the pants and cost about 99 cents. Hope that helps.

I guess you wouldn't need a tranny temp hu? Pyrometer being the most important so you don't burn your engine down. Pretty much after that they are just bells and whistles.
