Exhaust system exiting in front of rear wheel. good idea or bad?

I was wondering if anyone has used any muffler and instead of putting pipe over the rear wheel had ended it in front of the rear tire. Much like the ford lightning. Gibson also makes a muffler with 2 pipes bent at about a 90 degree turn that exit in front of the rear wheel. If theres no problems like melting tires seems like a good idea. Save a lot of money to. I was thinking cutting all the pipe off until the cat and getting a single in single or dual out 3 inch or 3inch in 2.5 dual out.

My '97 4.6 F150 came with the exhaust exiting in front of the right rear wheel - no problems at 154K miles.

I believe most, if not all of the long bed fords previous to 99 had theirs exiting before the axle.

97 came this way. 98-up exit behind the wheels due to customer complaints of exhaust soot soiling the rear wheel.

This is how I have mine, no problems. I replace the stock muffler (HUGE!) with a Borla and some custom bent pipe at the muffler shop. Got a pic in my gallery.

I have talked to several people about this very same issue and some people that have them have had trouble keeping their back wheel(s) clean other than that I don't believe there would be a problem with it.

I like the look of dual pipes exiting the rear of the truck,1 on each side of the hitch reciever. It's what I am planning for early next year.
