Joe,

I think it depends on how you plan to use the truck and how important gas mileage is to you. If you plan on doing a lot of around town cruising and little highway driving, I'd go for something around 3.50 or even 3.70 to make it perform better between stop lights. If you plan to do more highway driving and want better gas mileage something around 3.00 might be better. The TH400 has a shorter first gear ratio than most other automatics and you would still get pretty good off the line performance even with a taller rear gear.

Good answer, Vern.
To elaborate ('cause I'm trying to be like John N), My 56 has an FMX tranny and had a one-legged 3.0 9-inch in it when I bought it. I changed out to a 3.50 posi. I love the jump off the lights, but wish I wasn't wringing the snot out of it at 75. Now I need an AOD.
See, I'm even starting to do things like John N.

Randy,

There's an easy solution to that...keep your foot out of the accelerator and:

DON'T DRIVE IT 75!

well to figure out what gear you want to run you also need to know tire size and also final drive gear of the trans, if it is 1 to 1 or different cause of an over drive.
