What's up with my gas mileage????
#47
Ok, explain this one.
I bought my truck from the dealer with 265 miles on it. The first tank of gas I got about 19.6 mostly highway, some light city driving.
So I have filled up with the same gas, from DIFFERENT gas stations. Not all the same, and not all different.
My gas milage has progressivly gotten worse. I have now 5,600 miles and I just checked my milage today and it is 14.76.
I know they have switched to winter blend, but that should have affected it earlier on. Each tank of gas shows about a 1/2 mile per gallon less than the previous.

Your truck weighs 6,200 lbs. and my std. cab short bed 4X4 weighs 5,110. No wonder we have a great variation in fuel mileage. I'm very pleased with my mileage as it slightly exceeds the ratings on the sticker but I think all trucks with the same engine had the same rating even though there is a great variation in weights and gears.

Howdy,
I bought a F-150, 5.4L FX-4 Super cab with a 5.5' bed this summer. I check the mileage for each gas tank by calcualtions and try to drive conservatively.
I got better gas mileage before the first oil change at 1,000 miles (15 to 17 mpg). After the oil change it immediately dropped about 2 mpg.
I was told by the dealer that the trucks come from the factory with thinner oil because the engines are tight. Could that be true??

04 black screw larait 4x4, 5.4 ,373ls. 1 was getting 21 mpg on hywy and 16 an town, then they changed the clutch and pinion gears in the rearend, and my milage just keeps worse. i have 12,000 and i'm getting 12mpg in town and 17 on hywy, still not bad but i think there is still something wrong in the rearend. it feels like it is slipping, maybe to loose now. they said it was to tight before thats why they changed it.but it runs good and i do not have the vibration problems yet and hope not to get them.

Something seems wrong. I don't have a new 150, but I had a 2001 with the 5.4 and averaged around 16.5 with a high of 21. Never got less than 14.5 average per tank. Calculated long term averages.
The thing that I would be most annoyed at is Ford's advertising. The claim when the new 5.4 was announced was that it was more efficient.
I average 12.5 with my 2001 F250 V10 4x4 auto Crew Cab....
Good Luck
Eric

Gas mileage
I have an 04 F150 ext cab Lariat. Got the tow package as I tow at least 1-2 times a week pulling a horse trailer.
When I first got the truck and beofre my first oil change, I got a between 18-19 mpg and was estatic. Since then, (currently have 11,600 miles on it) I get 14-14.5, sometimes 15 mpg and don't know why it went down???? Plus, I haven't really noticed that big of a difference when I tow. Maybe I should figure it out manulally versus relying on the computer???? I do know it seems like every other day, I need to get fuel.
I have also noticed that if I don't fill the gas tank up, it burns it faster...why?
I use 89 unleaded fuel and anything but Shell. I hvae not noticed any improvement when I use a more expensive brand

hey guys,
dont know if anyone really cares, but i will give my .02. before getting my 04 xlt scab 5.4, i had a 03 explorer with the v6, which my wife currently drives. comparing window stickers the 300hp truck shows a drop in mpg on both city and highway of 1mpg. 15 and 18 in exp and 14 and 17 in truck. both of those vehicles were close in actual mileage to what the sticker said. and comparing ride, the truck feels like a caddy, and the explorer feels like a truck.
bottom line, better ride and more power, i'll give up a few extra $'s a week for the mileage!!!!
