'99 XLT Reg Cab 2.5/5-speed manual--have 42,000 miles on it.
As been mentioned before--the windshield wiper thing--will make a pass for no apparent reason, then return to normal. Was there a recall? didn't get the letter.
Also get the 2nd to 3rd gear scratch sometimes, guess the syncronizers can't keep up with me. No low end power with the 2.5, not a good candidate to teach the kids how to drive a stick with, it's easy to "Kill it"
I do enjoy it tho, thinking about a new one, maybe with the 3.0 this time

The Technical Information at the top of the Ranger Forum gives you a good idea of some of the problems that occur with Rangers. One of the things that hasn't been mentioned is the DPFE sensor problem. Luckily, that one is a very easy fix. I'm sure that your Ranger will give you many years of reliable service.

i bought a 2000 xlt 4x4 this year also. i have lived through the common auto trans valve body gasket. this is common in pre 2001 5 speed autos. that cost $399 to install the revised gasket. Other common problems i've seen on this site are PFE sensors, speed sensors, dome light switches, EGR, pinging, and lower intake gaskets.

I had a 94 Ranger Supercab 2x2, prior to buying my 97 4x4. The only real failure was the front brake pads seem to wear out around 20k. Cheap fix. I do a lot of city driving, so that most likley contributes to it. Replaced the rears at 70K, never messed with them again, except for adjusting them. Sold it with 141,000 on it, no complaints

2000 2.5L Ranger rattles up hills
I just bought a used 2000 Ranger XLT 2.5 liter in really good shape except it rattles a little when climbing hills...is this just me getting used to a 4 cyl, or is there something wrong? Only 66K miles...any ideas?

By far, I think the wost probem with rangers, at least 4x4 ones from 98-some 2000's are the Pulse Vacuum Hubs failing. I'm on my 3rd set now at 75,000 miles and they are starting to go again. Going for the cheap fix of just locking the hubs in permanently this time as the ext. warranty is gone. It seems like i see more posts on here about those hubs than anything else in newer rangers....

2003 ranger wont go over 3k rpm
Just bought a 2003 ford ranger with a v6 3.0 liter. I've changed the coil, spark plugs, cables, intake mass air flow sensor. Now it starts better but won't go over 3,000 rpms in park. Once it's in gear, it won't pick up more than 1200 rpms. Anyone seen this before? Any suggestions? Thanks.

My worry would be the camshaft position sensor,, I have a 99 XLT V6 3.0L and was told that a oiling problem caused the camshaft sensor to shellout at about 75000 miles,,,,replace with Ford Motorcraft OEM part not a Autozone or other.....after replace inspect it for wear after 30000 miles ,,,,,this sensor connects to oil pump and that is a part you do not want to stop working
