Try finding the plug to the O2 sensor. You probably have a feedback carburetor that requires an oxygen sensor input to determine the correct mixture.

is there anyway to bypass the entire computor box? i noticed in my 85 parts ranger it doesnt even have that box. In another ranger my uncle has the o2 senser is right in the exhaust manifold but my manifold doesnt have the provisions for a 02 senser in it. it looks like it was swaped out at one time or another

if it calls for an o2 sensor it needs one those buggers will throw off the milage badly, BTW there some one wire o2 sensors, dunno but you may have had one of those.

if it did you could always have a threded bung welded into the exhaust pipe befor the cat.
