I use only Motorcraft 5W-20 semi-synthetic. That's what Ford says to use and I have had no problems with it. The thicker oil is harder for the pump to push and waste power and gas mileage. The engines are deigned with tight tolerances for the thinner oils.
Only a Motorcraft filter too!!

i've been using 5W 30 since truck was brand new with motorcraft filter. i always trust motorcraft brand over any other just on quality and ford makes their stufff right for their vehicles. i'm at 116,890miles and still going strong.

Right now I am using motorcraft 5W20in my 03 SD, but I'm not sure if I'm very happy with it. the truck sounds like a diesel when you first start it, if it sits for more than 1 day. I have seen many modulars run 10W30 (mainly V10's) up to 100K miles or so with no problems.

Just curious, what oil filter are you using. It sounds like the anti drain back valve may not be holding. I use Motorcraft 5W-20 with the Motorcraft FL820S oil filter in my 4.6 and the starts and running are quiet.

Mobil 1 5w-30 Synthetic
And either Wix or Motorcraft filters

Ford says to use 5w-30 Synthetic Oil, it is in your engine compartment.

I am using 5w-30
(My owners manual says 10w-30 - 4V 5.4)

But I want a bit more flow at colder temps... As my motor gets hotter than the standard motors, I see no reason in going to 5w-20

Running the 5w-30 semi-synthetic motorcraft with a motorcraft filter, cheap and good.

Do all of the Ford Dealerships use 5w-20 Motorcraft along with the filter since they recommend it?
