What Tire Size? Help
My father-in-law just bought a new 2004 F-150 4x4 with P235/75/17. He needs to get some new rims and tires for hunting season in lower Indiana (snow)
I know nothing about tires or 4x4's. He wants to keep the stock height which seems pretty high to me and doesn't want hugh rutts on the tires like Thornbirds. Wants it to be semi-quite. What size rim/tire combo works good in both mud and snow and what brand of tire would you all recommend.
Thanks in Advance,
Kevin

A good tire for snow and mud is the BFG AT/KO. Good size would be LT265/70R17. This would be about 3/4" larger in diameter than what came with the truck. A bit noisier than OEM, but worth it IMO. Others listed around here are Bridgestone REVO. I do not have experience with these, just the BFG's.

28570R17 is the biggest tire you can fit on a 2004 F150 without problems. You can't go any smaller that 17" on the rim. 28570R17 is just a little bit smaller than a 33x11.5. I got some tire and rims when I had my 2001 F150 and found the best prices by looking in a 4x4 magazine. I bought mine from national tire and wheel. They had the best prices and shipped them mounted and balanced on the rim and aired up.

Speed8988, I bought a set of Mickey Thompson Baja Belted tires with rims from Mickey Thompson when I had my last truck. They were great in all conditions, especially getting up the loggin trails to get to the hunting cabin. The only problem was loud road hum and my fuel economy went way down, due to the aggressive tread. I would recomend BFG A/T or Mickey Thompson Baja Radial MTX. Stick with a radial all terrain and you won't get the load road hum and your fuel economy should stay ok. I looked at my truck last night (04 4x4 screw) and I think you would be able to fit a 33X11.5 or 12 depending on the rim backspacing, but would want to find some one who has put that size on with no lift to see if there is rubbing before buying. When I put the tires on my last truck everyone said they were too big and would rub, but they didn't. I used a ruler with the stock tires and turned them from one side to the other and measured the clearance and found out that they would fit. It's kind of hard to figure out, but in the end it worked. If I find out anything more or swap my tires out, which I want to do before winter comes I will let you know what worked for me.

Guys thanks for the Tires Recommends. I can't find a cheap 17" inch wheel for the ford and I wastold I have to go 17" because of the caliper. I'm I stuck with the stock alloy rims. I'm using the truck for Hunting and really don't feel like messing them up..Also I called Tire Rack on the 265/70R 17 $166 any other places

If he wants OEM rims, he may be able to find some on Ebay as a lot of folks do the custom route and sell there stock rims. If not there and you want OEM style, Ford has them as a kit where you get the wheel and center cap. That is the route I went for my second set. He should be able to get at least 10 or 15% off list price, if the dealer wants the sale.
