65 F100 and Aftermarket wiring harness

I own a 65 Ford F100 and over the summer my OEM wiring harness shorted out and melted about 3/4 of it. I had been planning on replacing the harness with Painless Wiring or some other outfit but I want your input before I dive into this project. Are there any good websites that show a detailed installation? I plan on changing from my 410 cid to a more economical 351 cid in the future. Is there anything I should keep in mind for this project.

It should also be noted that I am building my truck for long distance cruising. I will eventually have ac and all the comforts of home.

Thanks for any help.

I ahve never used an aftermarket kit, but from what I am hearing they all are going to require some thinking and retro-fit for every application. If you want plug and play, see if you can find an original style wiring harness.

I put in a Ron Francic kit. It takes time but is not too difficult. The directions were clear. It was more $$ than I had wanted to spend but I am please with final outcome.

Take the time to position the fuse box where it can be readily accessible during the original change over process, adding electrical components and for changing out fuses over the years. Buy some good quality wire loom, some extra generic electrical connectors and some heat shrink tubing.

The only original wires left on my Truck are the pig tails from the wiper motor. Everything else is new. I have all new guages & switches.

Most electrical probles are really mechanical in nature. The connection fails or gets corroded, or you ground out a circuit.

Do your homework. Read instructions, all of them (twice). Plan your work. Gets some good quality cold beer and get to work.

Took me two days after all the prep work.
