99 Ford Explorer Sport 4x4 that 'sqeals' or 'whines'

As the temperature is dropping(30 degrees) this year I notice that in the morning or after a large period of inactivity the Explorer makes a high pitch whinning noise for about 1 minute or two of driving. Applyring the brakes (emergency or normal) does not increase or decrease the noise. The only this that affects the noise is the speed of the vehicle. I hope it is not a bearing... Does anyone have an idea

Just want to make sure, it is a 99 ,still under warranty. Is it that you dont trust the Ford dealer, they should assume the warranty and look at the probleme you are talking about

There is a TSB about fixing this problem. They replace a plastic seal in the front hub. Very common on the Explorers.

I have had 2 99 4x4 XLT's - both had a horrible "squeal" from the left front wheel on days when the temp fell below 35F. There is a TSB addressing this. They replace the front hub seals. Should take care of the problem.

Listen Gents; that 'seal' needs to be replaced properly. The forth pair I had installed (4 times)was installed by a 'pro.' He packed the seal in grease, not too much, just enough that it DOES not squeal anymore. The very short term solution is to put the plastic tube on your WD-40 and give the area where the axle goes through the hub a shot. DO NOT GET any brake parts wet with oil DUH! It will help until it wears out or washes out. Best bet get them replaced....
