Glow plug question

My fairly new '04 F250 is the first diesel I've ever owned and I now know why their supporters praise them so much. What I'm wondering is if I need to always wait for the glow plug light on the dash to go out before starting? Is it mandatory or is it just a starting aid? Is it only important when the engine is cold or should I wait until the light goes out every time I start it? Any help would be appreciated.
