Question I hear WATER?? 2003 F-150 ...

Hey guys ...

My 2003 F-150 runs GREAT ... almost 20,000
trouble free miles!!!!

but .... when it's really HOT and HUMID and I run
my A/C ... I hear WATER rushing around ... and I
don't mean a few drops ... I step on the brakes,
I hear rushing water ... I step on the gas .. I hear
rushing water ......

I see an evaporator pan under my dash ... running
through the firewall .... and I see water dripping under
my truck when I stop .... also every so often I find
a small amount of water on my passenger side mat ...

Luckily I have a "work truck" so I don't have carpeting
otherwise I'd be ticked that my rug was wet ....

So anyway, my truck is still under warrantee, so I'll
probably end up making the dealer fix it .. but I'd just
like to know if this is a 'common' problem??

Thanks,

docbrown

Drain may be partially blocked.

Its a common problem on the later models as far as the leaking onto the floor. They need to put a rubber drain hose on the evaporator and seal around the drain tube with silicone. In some cases they will need to adjust the evaporator plenum. If it is trapping water to the point that you hear water sloshing the carpet lining may have trapped between the drain and the firewall. (Yes you have a liner pad even with rubber floor matting) Ive seen a couple like that.

My 1991 F-150 does the same thing. Any idea where the drain plug is, I can not seem to locate it to try cleaning it out. Thanks.

Crawl under the truck and look at the base of the firewall under the evaporator case. There should be a hard plastic nipple that goes through the firewall that may have a rubber hose attached to it.

The drain can be cleared by gently cleaning it with a bent coat hanger. Exercise caution so that you don't poke a hole in the evaporator core with the cleaning tool.

Most shops have a special air nozzle (long with a 90 degree bend near the tip) that allows them to quickly blow the clog out of the nipple using shop air.

Be prepared for a nasty shower.

Thanks for the info.

I found the nipple and ran both a coat hanger and compressed air through there. Surprisingly, no luck at all. The water is simply not draining from where it should. Next steps??

Thanks again.
