Timing marks on 460
Hello,
I tried to time my truck, 86 F250 w/ 460 and there were no timing marks to be found. There is a bracket that tapers to sort of a point on top of the balancer but no marks on the balancer.
I was looking for a metal piece with marks on it indicating the degrees of timing.
Any thoughts? I hit it with the timing light thinking that I could see the mark as the engine turned into view but no dice.
Thanks
Larry

Got a piece of chalk?
The timing marks are on the harmonic balancer, but if you're engine is like mine they're impossible to find until you chalk them.
I'm assuming you found the little metal triangle over the harmonic balancer, it sounds like what you described. The triangle is sort of on the passenger side, and the only way to see it is to look between the 2 air pumps (assuming your '86 is the same as my '85).
To find the timing marks, get underneath the truck and turn the engine by hand (a breaker bar with a deep socket or whatever is easiest) and watch the balancer until you find the marks. They're hard to see, but they're there. When they appear, mark them well with chalk. Then you'll have no problem timing it.

yes they are there. like was said get under the truck. i use a remote starter with the coil wire pulled off so i can bump it to where i need it. get a wire brush (the rotary kind you use with a drill) and brush off the surface of the balancer. also try getting a high powered flashlight....not a trouble light but a flashlight so you can turn it in odd ways in the tight spaces under your motor.
