how would I paint the alum on my brush guard?

rough it up (sand lightly), prime & paint! Easy as 1-2-3!

How about Chrome? Got to completely sand it off, or rough it up a bit, or just paint right on it?

same as Alum. Scuff it well(take the shine off), clean it completely (wipe with alcohol and a tack rag), prime it (scuff the primer if it cures more than 24 hrs and clean again), then paint it. Surface preparation is the key to a good paint job.

Great advise. You can pretty much paint any surface if you prepare it correctly and use the right products for the job!
