Question 4x2 compared to 4x4...

I have a 4x2 f-150 and I was just wondering....since it's not 4x4, does that mean it's got just a regular suspension and not true "truck" suspension? In other words, because it's not a 4x4 does that mean that the truck can't handle things a 4x4 would without damaging the suspension? How much better is the suspension on the 4x4?

No diff... the rear is the same, and that's where the work is done.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and the 4x2 will tow more since it doesn't have the extra wieght of the 4x4 components to lug around as well. If you don't have traction issues (ie, winter) or go off road, a 4x2 maybe the truck for you!

The suspension is roughly the same. The only difference is you don't have as much stuff up front to break, and the 4x4 is taller. 4x4 option actually takes away from your GVWR, so you can haul more with a 4x2. The suspension changes are usually significant when you order a heavy duty, or camper special package.

Darn, I should of bought the 4x2 instead, but the last time I settled for a 4x2 I had buyer's remorse.

And the potential for better mileage (less wieght to lug), easier to get in/out off ('cuz its lower), lower insurance premiums (Bronco's right, less stuff to break)...

The front coil springs are bigger on the 4x4's.

I actually take some offense to that statement since I purchased a 4x4, but I'll let it slide this one time. Hey you're from McAllen? So am I! Actually I'm from corpus but I've been living down here for 5 years now. What's up?

Only a yuppie drives a store bought 4x4. When you get your open diff, little tire, under articulated 4x4 stuck, you'll end up calling a real truck to pull you out. Real 4x4s have to be towed. It's an insult to ask them to share the road with mopeds.

And only a "non-economically viable" individual moans about yuppies buying store-bought 4x4's. Not all of us want to drive around in beaters from yester-year or 2-wheeldrive trucks. I love my store-bought 4x4, takes me where I want to go. You're right, I won't be rock-crawling in my 04, but I wouldn't want to either. Damn thing is too nice for that. Buy what you can afford, bitch about those who can afford more.....
