Electric fuel pump air locking???

Hello,
I have a problem with my electric fuel pump on my 1936 ford pick up. Every once in a while I will go to take it for a drive and it will not start for any thing. If I take the fuel pump down from the frame a remove the top and brake the seal it will either release air or suck in air (can't tell whitch). I then put it back in place and the eng. starts right up. If anyone could tell me what's going on it would be great.

Thanks,
Brett

How big is the supply line to the pump? Is the pump mounted lower than the tank? The pumps push fuel very well but don't develop much suction. If you have a tank cap with no vent and no other vent in the system you could be developing a suction in the tank.
