Diesel Q's
hey everyone,
I'm new to ford 6.9 and 7.3 diesels but i know my way around the clevelands and someother diesels used in trucks and heavy machinery.
My basic questions for the 7.3 and 6.9 are:
1) Are they avaliable as a mechanical injection model, so I don't have to tool around with electronics and computers?
2) What years were they made
3) Torque Hp @ what rpm?
4) How easy are they to put into a 1969-1979 F100?
thanks,

All 6.9/7.3 until the Powerstroke where mechanical injection
>2) What years were they made
Don't know the actual starting production year for the 6.9, but they were used in the F-series from 83-94.
>3) Torque Hp @ what rpm?
My '91 7.3 had 185hp@3300rpm
>4) How easy are they to put into a 1969-1979 F100?
You could put it in a 69-79 with a 460 tranny, and fab your own motor mounts, but I would suggest using at least a F-250 as these motors weigh about 1000#, which is quite a bit more than a F-100 would like to see.

Diesel Q's
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 15-Sep-02 AT 11:12 AM (EST)]The 6.9L(420 cid) diesel was rated at 161 hp@3,000rpm(170 in later model years). It was put in over 8,500GVW trucks starting in 1983 thru the 1987 models. In 1988 it was enlarged to 7.3L(444 cid),and horsepower ratings were generally 180-185 hp@3,300rpm.These were IDI diesels. In mid-1994 Navistar & Ford revised the 7.3L,making it a DI(direct injection)diesel.Horsepower was 210-215.They named it "Powerstroke".This diesel had many more horsepower & torque upgrades over it's production run.As of the 2003 models the Powerstroke diesel is still available.I think it's horsepower rating now stands at 275(manual)/250 (automatic),with something like 520 lb.-ft. of torque!

Thanks fellas,
Were any direct injection 7.3's actually mechanically injected? Do any of you blokes have links to sites that give detailed information about the mechanically injectet 6.9 and 7.3 litre diesels?. As for the 460 transmission, would a ZF and a 9" diff be OK?
Thanks again,
