Question 98 windstar oil filter

Can anyone help me figure out how to get to the oil filter on my 98 Windstar without a lift or grease pit? There's not much room under the van, and the filter is above some cross member. Can I access it through the passenger side wheel well?

Thanks for any help you can give me,
Mike

I have a 1996 with the same problem. I have not been able to find another way to it (or without spilling on the crossmember, for a week leak).

I always have to go in from underneath the vehicle.

my neighbor has a 98 and uses my ramps for every oil change he does. I have never seen how hard it is to change but he seams to get it done. We do use the same filter on his and my vehicle-FL400S-they fit my geo metro's just fine!

While I know some of you might frown, in this case I have a suggestion. Concerning oil filters in a hard to reach location, that leak all over crossmembers, chassis parts etc. when removing. After draining the oil into the pan, briefly start the engine for 5-7 seconds with the oil pan bolt off. There is still plenty of lubrication and oil film not to cause any damage to the engine. By doing this, you pump the oil out of the oil filter, back into the block and into the pan. The oil filter is basically "dry". Then, when you remove it, no oil spills or leaks anywhere. Again, I only use this method on hard to reach, obscure oil filter locations...no mess, no leaks, no week long oil spots in your driveway or garage... PS Make sure the engine is still warm when you do this. I do not recomend this for cold start engines, plus I know we all drain oil out hot or at least warm, correct?

WHAT?!?!?! That is crazy. I would never do that. Just place a tarp or cardboard under your van if you are worried about the driveway. Also, a rag does wonders for wiping off your crossmember! I would NEVER run an engine without oil. That is just asking for trouble! IMHO!
