k and n air filter caused mass airflow sensor to go bad?
so.... i had my check engine light go solid and the truck would not hold an idle.....
so i took it into the dealer and the mass airflow sensor was bad.
they are claiming that the k and n filter's oil had dripped into the sensor and caused it to go bad.... an out of warranty problem that will cause me a 400+ dollar bill!
can this be true?

Hmmmm... My Ford dealer sells K and N filters over the counter in their service department- they wouldn't sell anything that could void a factory warranty would they? :-X23

My air flow sensor went out last year and I replaced it myself for $85.00. As far as the K&N filter causing that, I find that hard to beleive. I had 73,000 on my 99 V10 F-250SD when mine went out, but it had gone thru two harsh Texas summers already.

dealer will fix under warranty if i ditch the k&n setup and go back to stock.....
i think this is a valid issue with the dealership... they told me that this is commonly seen on mustangs with the k&n.....
the reason i say valid is because k&n has in their website faq, an entry on this... now they say it is not possible unless u over oil the element, but i used mine right out of the box... pre-oiled as they come.... so i know i didn't over oil.... and i would hope they don't at the factory....
i am kind of pissed with this since i like the k&n..... but not if it will cause me problems!

K&N did have an issue some time back where the filters came from the factory with too much oil on them.
I'd bet it's an issue where the MAF needs cleaned- not necessarily replaced. If it does need replaced, get an aftermarket version... then send that Diablo back for another reprogramming.

well.... as i said, it was the pre-oiled one they sent..... i wonder if it was one of the old ones that nomo speaks of?
as for it being too oily, well i have used them before in teh past and didn't notice it being too oily or driping for that matter.... how would one know what too oily was?

I use these on my atv's and have oiled them numerous times. You can tell on the atv when it's been over oiled because you'll find the oil laying in the bottom of the airbox. I would think that if your trk filter was over done you'd be able to see some excess oil at the lowest point on the filter or on whatever is just below it. It doesn't take much to over oil these filters. The cotton gets permiated and soaks with a small amt of oil. I still like K&N and have an FIPK wtg to install when I get my trk. Hope ya get yours worked out.

well the ford tech said that he liked the k&n even though he thought they were over priced.... he did say that before ford went to the MAS, the k&n was fine.... but they have been seeing all kinds of problems with the MAS and k&n equiped vehciles. he pointed out that chevy was starting to see this too as they have apparently moved over to a MAS typoe configuration that ford has been doing for longer.
he also stated that ford has been in a back and forth lawsuit with k&n over this!
