Approve or Disapprove?
A 1993 XLT Ranger Regular cab, 4x4, 82,000 miles, NO rattles, solid everything, manual windows and lock, 5-speed. This thing is in showroom condition. He wants $4500. Is it reasonable? Oh yeah, I don't know if its a 3.0 or 4.0.
What are the opinions on these motors (3.0 & 4.0)? What are the opinions on the overall truck?

according to kelly blue book (kbb.com) for my zip it prices out a little over $3800. Go there and check it for yourself. I used the 3.0 with no real options.
I have a 94 4.0, 5 sp, 2wd ext cab and it is a great little truck.
I have added 15 inch wheels and larger tires, a free flow air intake and exhaust and get right around 20MPG running Avg of 70 mph. I get around 17 in town.
I added a cruise control, and have had to have the trans repaired 2 times. 1st from when we bought it, someone let the top plugs on the trans blow out and burned up 1st gear and the main cluster (a common problem, ask if it has been converted to the steel plugs or not) If it hasn't and makes a wirrr sound in 1st, 2d you will probably need a trans rebuild. The 2d time is I lost 5th (OD), no problem just ran as a 4 speed (19mpg).
Since it is a 4wd, make sure you check out that all works and if not an off road guy get someone who is to test drive and engage the system and actually get into a little dirt if the guy will let ya. Those repairs are also $$$. My trans rebuilds for both time is a little over $1300, not counting my labor to pull replace and the new clutch and slave cyl (both times, 2d due to GP's). I have a autozone lifetime clutch so they replaced everything but the slave under warrenty the 2d time so I saved there. 133000 and I just R&Rd the ujoints and carrier bearing, use no oil.
So if its what you want and appears to be in the condition you say and you check the bluebook, go for it. Be advised the 3.0 is kinda gutless so that is something else to consider. Get him down in price if a 3.0.
Let us know what ya do.

yeah, my truck 94 4.0l 4x4 supercab with topper and just turned 100k was like 4999 at the ford dealer, havent had any major problems with it, just common stuff you'd expect to find with a truck that has over 100k on it: starter went out, and the ideler pully's bearings rusted out causing it to unscrew itself which was just a stupid cheap pully. otherwise it seems to have low miles for a 93, my 94 has 110k on it right now, and its still runnin strong. if its a 3.0 i'd try to get him down to at least 4000, if its a 4.0 see if you can bargain, then take it. but like i said, low miles, i dont think i've seen a 93 with under 100k on it recently. Also make sure the 4x4 works, somtimes if it isnt used, the shift motor will gum up and need to be replaced or cleaned.

In my neck of the woods, that would not be a bad price given the year, mileage, and equipment. You can test the 4x4 without having to go play in the mud by engaging the 4x4 when stopped, then slowly driving in a curve. The truck should "buck". The 4.0L would be nice to have but it depends on how much of an emphasis you put on power. Also, in my neck of the woods it's pretty hard to sell anything with a standard cab so you might want to look into that.
Opinions? I bought my 94 Ranger XLT Supercab 4.0L 5sp with just about everything on it new; 166,700 miles later it's been the best twentywhatever thousand dollars I ever spent. I did get bit on the tranny at 109,000 miles but that's it. The rest has been just maintenance. Why it's still on the original muffler, starter, alternator, water pump, rear brakes, headlights, clutch, etc continues to amaze me. They are also fairly deer resistant; I popped one at 35MPH with minimal damage (around $1200).

Deer resistant??? I can see that in upcoming commercials. Leather seats, good gas mileage, most horsepower in class, deer resistant. lol
But anyways i have a 4.0 4x4, and the engine is really strong considering its size. And it takes a beating and asks for more. Mine is stock with 31 inch tires (the metric equivalent), and it is very capable on or off road. It rides a little rough, but good for a truck. It handles really good on road. A few magazines i read even said it had "sports car-like" handling. That may be a little much, but it handles good. And overall it looks better than the other trucks in the class.

I gave $4500 in December 01 for my 93 reg. cab 4.0 4x4 5-spd. In decent shape, with electric mirrors and windows with 89,000 miles at the time. If it doesn't have the 4.0 I wouldn't give that much for it, but I'm guessing it was cleaner than mine was so it sounds pretty reasonable if it has a 4.0. Brakes are the only real problem I've had, but I knew that when I bought it that they would need done. I also had problems with the 4x4 shift motor but a good cleaning out of that and it has been almost reliable, just gives fits when the temp drops below zero sometimes. I'm guessin that if it is that clean, then it was well taken care of but also that it never saw 4x4 mode very much, and that can cause problems if the shift motor doesn't get used enough. I would recomend engaging 4x4 several times to make sure it works properly.

I haven't tagged one yet with my ranger, but i got one with my sister's tempo. It was either a montrous doe or a spike buck, but i came over the top of the mountain (in WV) and saw it. I was going about 90-95 but i got slowed down to about 30-35 when i hit it. It ran from the other side of four lanes and right into the side of the car. The were no other cars around since it was 2:30AM. It held up better than i thought. Needs a new fender, but she hasnt got one yet. It probably could be fixed, but Oh well.
