Question Horn/Cruise control fuse keeps blowing

On my 1999 Ford Explorer, I'm having a problem with my horn fuse located in the fuse box in the engine compartment. It keep blowing when I honk the horn. This causes the cruise control and the horn to stop working. If I replace the fuse with a 15 amp fuse, it blows instantly. If I replace it with a 20 am fuse, it will work for a few days/weeks or until I press the horn on the steering wheel. When the fuse blows, the horn and cruise control stop working. My alarm system is connected so that when I lock my doors by remote control, my horn honks. This does not blow the fuse but the horn sounds very weak.

Today, I pressed the emergency lights switch on the steering column and after a while a little whisp of smoke started rising out
of the steering comlumn. It stopped immediately when I turned off the emergency lights.

Has anyone out there experienced the horn/cruise control problem and if so, do you know the cure?

Look for a post by Steve83 that talks about the cruise/horn circuit.

Just do a search for cruise control in the 80-86 ,87-96 truck forums.

You can try removing the: Horn pad/Cruise switch pad and look for a short there.

Disconnect the horn(s) put a 15 amp fuse in there, and see if it blows. If it doesn't, plug in one horn if you have more than one, and see if it blows. If it doesn't, unplug that horn and plug the other one in to see if it blows.
