dana 60 spline count

Hey there,

Does the presence of studs holding the axleshaft to the hub on ford dana 60's instead of nuts indicate it's a posi or a 35 spline unit? This would mostly pertain to 67-72 era trucks as that's what I'm usually looking at. My '70 heavy F-250 4X had the 16 spline go bang open 4.10 dana 60 in the rear when I got it with bolts on the axle flanges. My 67 parts truck light duty F-250 4X has a 35 spline 4.56 geared powerlok dana 60 with studs and nuts holding the axles in. I'm also looking at getting a 68 2wd camper special truck. I can't pop the cover off the 60 or pull an axle out, but I know it has 3.73's and it has the studs on the axles. Want to know if the studs tell anything about what's inside. Anybody know why ford used studs on some trucks and bolts on others? Was it just by year or was it by engine size, posi or gvw? Thanks
