My favorite six story is a few years back when some dude at school with a 302 (who knew absolutely nothing about anything mechanical at all) decides to talk crap up and down about how weak a 6 cyl. would be in a truck. So we finally decide to do a pull off, after dragging his butt all around the school parking lot, he looks back and yells. "THATS NOT A ****ING 6 CYLINDER" He's never talked bad about my truck again.

I just had to hook bumpers to a 88' 2500 Rc LWB 2wd HIGH geared 5 speed( No granny) 350 TBI chevy. He was taking trash about my 78 I used 2 chains I thought he would put up more of a fight than he did.In short HE SMOKED his clutch, and with the good old NP435's granny I yanked him all over and NOTHING he could do about it now I HAVE BRAGGEN RIGHTS with my I 6

I"ve never tried to do a pull off with someone, but i do have an interesting story to share.
I was helping some friends move into their new home and we had to go pick up a trailer, loaded with this big heavy Ferguson tractor...not including the weight of the trailer, which i assume was close to 2k lbs itself.
Anyway we hook my truck up to it, and one of the jerks there says "We'll probably have to get that 4x4 Chevy over there to move this thing". Needless to say, that pushed my buttons, as soon as they said go i pulled that frickin trailer & Tractor almost over its 3 inch wheel chocks before the realized i had done it.... Needless to say i shut that chevy lovers yap quick like.
And this is a non 4x4, 2.47 geared slow street truck.... So i think i did pretty good that day.

Let us remember the small block Ford inline sixes. The 170, 200, and 250 were the 240 and 300's little brothers. My fondest memories of the little 200 were in Highschool, my friend had a Fairmount with over 200,000 miles on it. He drove it like he stole it every day. As I recall, never changed the oil in it. To him, the red oil light meant add a quart. We had so much fun with that car, bashing snow drifts, even off roading and mudding with it. Finally he got a "better" car, and we tried to blow up the old six, but it couldn't be done. After a month of brutally torturing the old girl, he got fed up and put a for sale sign on it and started driving his new car. Fast forward 15 years, he's been through several "better" cars, and the old Fairmount is still trundling around the neighborhood. We were just talking about that not long ago. He misses that car, and it's never say die engine. By the way, it has 350.000 miles on it now, according to it's current owner. Still hasn't had an oil change (just kidding!)

I had a buddy back in high school with a 80 f100 with a 300 and a four speed i mean this guy drov ethe hell out of it never changed the oil drove through a lady's living room mudded and even out pulled a 3/4 then finally he ran it till it locked up the machine shop said they would have to go 80 over and he did bore and still running around town never changing the oil. Most of the reason i went the 300 in my last truck was becuse the amount of pure abuse and spining tire he did and never gave him headaches.

my 300, 2wd with those old school mudder could go places some 4x4 couldn't. I could creep through a mud hole in granny, and the 300 was light enough that it never sunk, and the dana 60 in the rear was heavy enough so it did not slide around. I have a 390 in my muddin truck, and the 300 has about the same low end as my 390. 390 has a little more top end, but the 300 was a great motor, truck could only go about 72 floored, but i would pull whatever i put behind it.

There have been many other posts about pull offs. I've never done one, but I gather than the winner often has more technique than motor. Hooking up bumpers is not a good idea, unless you are willing to lose one. If you have a reciever hitch this is better, BUT because you don't have any weight on the rear end, you are much more likely to spin your tires.
Once your tires spin, you are DONE if the other guy doesn't spin his. As much as a manual clutch and granny dear would sound good for such an endeavor, an automatic will proably serve you better. Obviously, being blessed with a trac-loc (limited slip rear) will help you HUGE.
Franly, there are SO MANY other variables invovled in "pull offs" that the actual torque and power of the engine has little to do with it. As much as it may seen fun to do, its really a stupid idea, as it proves nothing, and you risk doing some serious damage to your ride.
I think the stories about I6s that are most interesting are the ones about longevity. The I6 is legitimately a stronger engine than a V8. It will be more durable and take more abuse. They made V8 diesels and put them in semis and tractors for awhile. You don't see them anymore.
The I6 is not a glamour engine -- its a worker. It can be made to perform nicely with some mods and still be reliable too. For me, I am a practical guy and I really respect things that last -- we just don't see that as much anymore.
