the car in the Red Hot Chili Peppers clip
I have heard of the old broncos being called jeeps many times in many places. When I asked why I was told it was because the old timers refered to every small 4x4 as a jeep because the jeep was actually a Ford and a *****'s. The brand name Jeep didn't come about untill after the war.
This is just how I understand it from aking why people do what they do.

the "jeep" was originaly called "the blitz buggy" and was created by the Overland company. Overland beat both ford and *****'s for the gov. contract but it was such a small company, it couldnt produce enough to meet demand. the gov. was so in love with the thing that they gave ford and *****'s the right to mass produce the "jeep". the Overland Co. was eventualy bought out by ****** and became the *****'s-overland co., then AMC bought them, and in '85 chrysler bought AMC.
the G.I's in WWII are the ones who named it the jeep. nobody knows exactly why but for whatever reason, it stuck.
everybody(that doesnt know a thing about 4x4's) nowadays, in whatever country, calles any 4x4 a jeep. when my girlfriend and i were looking for a new vehicle, she said"i want a jeep like that one" and was pointing to an Explorer! jeep is just a generic term now.
how could anybody ever be mad at allan jackson?

I had read that the army called it a "general purpose" vehicle. The G.I's called it a G.P. for short and it evolved into the "jeep". Makes sense to me.

the Bantam Motor Company designed and produced the first jeeps for testing by the Army. They did not have the production capacity that the ******/overland (sp) company did so the government gave the contract to ******. later it became apparent more production was needed so ford was authorized to produce a licensed copy. a neat thing about the ford jeeps was that all the bolt heads had ford stamped in them.

your right.....it was bantam not overland. my apologies, its been a while since i really cared about jeep history. my first vehicle was a CJ-7.
when i said nobody knows exactly why it was called the jeep, that part is true. the G.P. is one of a few reasons.

I just asked my dad to identify it from the video, and he is guessing around a 74' Bronco. From what I can gather, it has a rollbar, beefy off-road tires, and possibly a lift, but doubtful. If anyone is interested, I can take a screen capture from the video and post it on here.
